| In 1820 the Baron had
purchased land and built a two-room log cabin on a small
creek near the Alabama River.
In this new land he and his French wife enjoyed freedom
from the Old World prejudice. Class links were
broken and these prejudices would never bind the hands of
his offspring. The one link to
the past was the memories resting in his head. To
leave Germany was the only way to remove the royal
chain from around his neck. Love had cut through
the class system of Europe. The lovely eyes of the French
dancer and the German baron met in triumph. His
handsome blue eyes flashed excitedly over her
dark mellow ones. He reached out to receive the
little bundle of life in his arms. This was
the only true value in life, he was thinking. If
only his mother and father could see the little jewel.
He was sure their hearts would melt. Four years passed with Rozene
growing rapidly. She laughed and played with the
farm animals. The soft, funny, little kittens
were her favorite playthings. The mother cat really
didn't care for Rozene playing with her kittens.
As she cuddled a furry, little kitten in her arms, she
heard her mother call. When Rozene
reached the house her mother said, "Oh! Rozene
you must go to the Schmyths with PaPa." Rozene
obediently followed her mother's directions but she was determined that the Schmyths
would not intrude in her life. Alma Schmyth welcomed her
neighbors at the door. PaPa's voice sounded strange
to Rozene when he talked to Alma. Mrs.
Schmyth shook her head in agreement to whatever PaPa was saying. Rozene heard Alma
say, " I will tell Martin to get the doctor for
you." All this strange talk made Rozene fee sad and afraid. Lunch at the Schmyths prove
delightful to Rozene. She was permitted to help in
the kitchen. |
